Why bother promise if you're not up to it?

There are instances when I find myself trying to determine the point which would have triggered someone to do/say something. Fury is what I feel whenever I sense the probability of the occurrence of yet another broken promise.

Why the heck promise something which you know you'll never get to honour in the first place?  Why are promises taken oh so lightly; isn't one's word or pledge of any value anymore?

I guess promising something/anything just for the sake of it makes one a jerk/bit**, to say the least. But the most severe fault lies within the ones who stay still enduring it all over and over again without doing anything about it.
